Darren’s home in the hills of the Strathbogie Ranges in Central Victoriais integral to his art. The harmony of humans with nature is at the heart of both his works on paper and his sculpture. Darren’s sculptural work is sourced from abandoned timbers mellowed by age, and metal objects textured by weather. They are materials that already have history and from these lost and found materials, Darren creates a work that makes new history. His sculptures have organic form, often with a quirky element that sit comfortably in traditional or contemporary landscapes.
In contrast to these solid rustic forms, his black and white work is intricate and delicate. So fine is his line work that some viewers have been skeptical that it has been done by human hand. These disciplined exquisite drawings of Australian birds have been painstakingly researches for accuracy and reflect Darren’s fascination for avian subjects.
He is able to transpose, also marry his tactile organic expression with lost and found materials, to precision-based finely disciplined, detailed drawings of nature’s subjects. I could resonate with his passion to create and research, and to know his materials and subjects. He was a highlight of the exhibition.
Darren’s work is increasingly enhancing people’s homes and gardens all over Melbourne and Victoria.
